It all started in 1991 when Joe Roberts first created the Terriers Baseball School. A Varsity Baseball captain and Greater Boston League All Star at Boston University, Joe wanted to provide a fun and inclusive program for kids to enjoy in his hometown of Wellesley. Over the past thirty years, Terriers Sports developed a unique formula for creating musically-powered positive experiences led by student coaching, music and media programs. Terriers Sports evolved to include basketball, flag football, dodgeball, soccer, yoga and mindfulness programs, teen center programs and more with over 2,500 students served annually in more than 200 sessions. This highly autonomous environment allows children of any age, gender, background and ability to play together in fun and inclusive ways, while supporting their social and emotional growth and developing their personal agency.
In 2014, in response to dramatic increases in youth obesity, anxiety, depression and suicides, a group of parents with experience in youth development, coaching, management and mental health founded Community Investors as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The inspiration behind creating Community Investors was to share the unique and inclusive experiences developed by Joe Roberts and Terriers Sports over the past 30 years, and create a blueprint for other communities to launch similar programs.
This initiative is called PowerPlayRox. It is inspired by the tremendous power of play within all children, the positive impacts music has on development, and our mission to help more children tap into this potential. Community Investors aims to bring this concept nationwide into every community and share its formula for creating empathy for all kids through music and the power of play.
Fast forward to 2021, where youth obesity, depression and suicide rates are skyrocketing, and we are all living with the consequences of a pandemic world. Now more than ever, kids need a healthy social outlet. Despite the unprecedented challenges of this past year, our PowerPlayRox programs delivered a record 8,444 positive impactful experiences to area youths, including: 168 programs in 175 days, allowing 1,010 elementary school participants, 220 high school student coaches and 130 middle school coaches-in-training to safely return to enjoy active play together.
From 1991 to 2021, our mission has been clear and with support, we will be able to expand our reach, serve more communities and foster the physical, social and emotional wellness of generations to come.
“Anyone who has ever been to a program led by Joe knows that he is the secret-sauce to the PowerPlayRox recipe. His unique ability to bring kids of all ages, skills and backgrounds together in an inclusive, fun and fulfilling way is inspiring. As a parent, it’s comforting to know there’s an afterschool option where all are welcome and everyone comes home smiling (and sweaty!).” - A WMS parent
